Have you decided that your kitchen is now looking just a little too tired? As the days begin to get longer, after such a drab winter, our mood seems to brighten also. Optimism for the oncoming spring and summer leads us to consider the projects that we have been considering as we sat at home and suffered the cold.
The project you have in mind could well be a kitchen refit. Renovating your worn out kitchen is an assured way to add value and increase its attraction to potential buyers if it is done correctly.
We will address a few options open to you, when you are taking the plunge, preparing your plans, and managing your own kitchen refit.
Basic Floor Plan
Measure your kitchen floor plan and draw it out on a piece of paper. Drawing available units to scale also will allow you to cut them out and shuffle them around on your floor plan until you find a design you are happy with.
Remember where the drains are. To save money, your sink and dishwasher are probably best left roughly where they are. However, if you have a larger budget, you have far more options as any plumbing can be moved.
Out With The Old
Call in a plumber, gas engineer, an electrician to cap off or disconnect any appliances in the kitchen. Hire a skip, and rip out all of the old units and appliances. Now you can marvel at how large your kitchen actually is when it is empty.
You will need to invite your tradesmen back to do the first fix before the new kitchen can start being installed. Don’t forget to add a plasterer to your list.
In With The New
The kitchen cabinets can now be installed. Integrated appliances are most popular these days. An island will make use of wasted space, either as a breakfast bar, to hold a sink, or maybe even a hob as the one in the image.
Time for the tradesmen again to get your space-age appliances and plumbing reconnected.
You should have considered where the lighting will be situated before the first fix. Under cupboard lighting, recessed downlights, and many other styles are available and many other top-class online retailers. Lighting can change the whole mood of your kitchen.
There is no need to use cold ceramic tiles anymore. Laminate tile effect products are available. Easy to fit and replace, they are difficult to tell from the real thing, while keeping your feet cosy.
Now you have a chance to inject your personality into the room. You will have chosen your doors and drawer fronts. Perhaps vivid shiny colours. There are some awesome products available these days. With your decor, try to stay on the same area of the colour wheel, or choose a completely opposite colour on the wheel for the best effect. Anywhere in between doesn’t look as good.
Contrasting or complementary, window blinds finish the room off. Chose from Roman, Venetian, wooden, or vertical blinds amongst many others. Curtains can work too but are a little old hat in kitchens these days.
A more traditional style kitchen is shown in the picture, but look around, and you will find many modern colours and designs if that is what takes your fancy. There is a good chance that your kitchen will be made to last fifteen or twenty years in your home so be bold with your designs and buy the best quality you can afford. With kitchens, you really do get what you pay for.
